Excavated building of the Roman period

Stabilizing the walls of the Administration Building

The buildings of Sikait have been exposed to the eroding force of wind, water and sand and have endured many earthquakes. Despite this, some walls and rooms are still standing up to heights of over four meters, a clear proof of the skills of the ancient builders. But even these remarkable skills could not prevent walls from becoming unstable after so many centuries. Using mainly local stone as building material, some of the most urgent cases of endangered structures were consolidated during the 2002-2003 excavation season, but only very provisional measures could be taken. In the near future, more extensive stabilization, consolidation and restauration will be necessary to save the temples and houses of Sikait.
